My egotistical web page is at http://www.newearth.org/~michael . I run the computer (the NewEarth Swedenborg BBS) that serves that page and many others, and that serves this mailing list. I'm here to introduce myself and I warmly invite everyone else here to do the same. I'm not a school teacher, but I do think of myself as an educator. Working on the mailing lists called "Swedenborg" "Seekers" "Greeters" and others gives me many opportunities to both question and answer about the teachings given through Swedenborg, and to find out more about the ways that people approach and learn those ideas. If you are participating on any of those lists, I am interested in your insight as an educator on the processes that happen there. When I began this BBS in 1994, supporting educators connected to the church was one of my main purposes. A number of educators expressed enthusiasm about it, and I began building resources for them. When almost none of them actually went online, I was disappointed and stopped working on that project. Something happened recently that got me going again. A group of General Church teachers had a meeting this summer, and I was asked to produce name badges for them (one of the computer things I like to do). I looked at the list of names and realized that many of these people were online now. Then I scanned my big directory and noticed that "New Church Educator" was a pretty big category among the people I know. So I sent out a special invitation to the educators in my directory, and included a general announcement in the next directory. This list now includes people from a variety of schools, most prominently the General Church's _Academy of the New Church_ and the Swedenborgian Church's _Swedenborg School of Religion_. There are educators from all levels, elementary through university, all interested in using the ideas in Swedenborg's writings in the educational process. Not all of us belong to churches or work for church institutions. I'm excited by the potential for exchange of ideas and resources here. Please be aware that this is a group of varied background, and that some groups of people share jargon, common experience and abbreviations that mean nothing to others. I hope we can express ourselves in ways that include and invite everyone. This is, I'm sure, good practice for any teacher. Peace, Michael -- Michael V. I'm a professor of psychology at the University of Hawaii and manage the Swedenborg Hawaii Home Page site at http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/~leonj/leonj/leonpsy/instructor/swedenborg.html which includes articles I've written on science education, especially from the NC perspective, as I see it--a "Swedenborgian" scientist. It is my belief that the new age thinking which the Writings establish will spread through science and science education. One of my suggestions for NC education has been to use the Writings as a science text, supplemented by current science texts. In other words, to teach as "science" what Swedenborg himself considered science, both in his Scientific Writings and in his Theological Writings. Rather than seeing Swedenborg's science as non-modern, 18th century stuff, I believe it should be rightly considered post-modern, and expressing the future of science, not the past. I often feel isolated in my position as an educator - in and out of NC settings. I have had to depend on the morphogenic field and the spiritual world for most of my feeling of connectedness. I have been teaching 25 years - both religion and expressive arts, including writing and theater arts. Just wrote an article for the New Church Performing arts journal. I see the doctrine of regeneration as a parallel the stages of creative thinking, and that learning to receive the influx of the DIvine is the way to creative inspiration. Furthermore, I am looking forward to the intersection of many fields of study, such as medicine and the arts, with the help of the light of revelation concerning correspondences, the grand person, and the interaction of the spiritual world with this world. Wonderful! I believe that the Writings contain an endless source of knowledge that can be developed or drawn out with apporpriate methods, methods that in the future, will get more sophisticated than now. An example of futuristic possibilites, in my view, is Christen Blom-Dahl's work called "The Third Source" in which he shows that many passages about Swedenborg's travels through the Grand Human that involve evil spirits, are readable as specific details about the action of viruses in the body, thus anti-dating the virus theory by more than a century. If you want to see it go to: http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/~leonj/leonj/leonpsy/instructor/christen/Sweden.htm What's additionally interesting in this approach is to try to understand how Swedenborg saw the virus idea: explicitly as we see it today, or perhaps globally and affectively or aesthetically, rather than cognitively and with the understanding. Christen feels, I think, that Swedenborg was in a trnace-like state of mind when he wandered through the spiritual travels, but all this is very, very tentative, but interesting.
