In June 1997, a number of people told me that such a group would be very useful, so I set it up. Now that it's been more than a year since anyone posted anything, I'll assume that you have forgotten about it. Please check out http://teachers.newearth.org and let me know what you think. I probably will not refer to it, since I have a hard enough time fitting in email. But thanks for setting it up -- it does seem that someday it will be used a lot. Lawson From maynard@interaccess.com Tue Sep 8 12:08:57 1998 From: maynard@interaccess.com (Maynard Riley) Date: Tue, 08 Sep 98 07:08:57 -0500 Subject: NCED: De Charms "Growth of the Mind" Message-ID: <199809081200.HAA15090@neuman.interaccess.com> Hello to all on the list. I am a member of the GC society in Glenview, with children in the first and second grades there. "Growth of the Mind" [GotM hereafter] is one of the favorite books in my collection, and one which I have frequently given to newlyweds. Presently I am interested in knowing to what degree this book is actively used in NC education, both of the students and of the teachers. At the same time I'm wondering if some other scholarship has superceeded or augmented this work. With answers to these questions, I intend to refine some strong and attractive ideas for discussion toward possible implementation both in the schools and at home, with an end in sight of helping my children enter teen years with an affection for the Lord, His Word, the Church, and the Writings which hopefully they will increasingly revere rather than dismiss as they come more consciously and actively into their personal development and integration into adult society. Thanks in advance for your participation, `~Maynard Riley From lorin@newearth.org Tue Sep 8 23:23:48 1998 From: lorin@newearth.org (Lori Jane Nelson) Date: Tue, 8 Sep 1998 23:23:48 +0000 (/etc/localtime) Subject: NCED: De Charms "Growth of the Mind" In-Reply-To: <199809081200.HAA15090@neuman.interaccess.com> from "Maynard Riley" at Sep 8, 98 07:08:57 am Message-ID: <199809082323.TAA12370@sapphire.newearth.org> Maynard Riley asked: > > Presently I am interested in knowing to what degree this book > is actively used in NC education, both of the students and of > the teachers. One thing to keep in mind about GOTM is that the years of age mentioned are "in the x year of life," so "12" means "headed for the twelfth birthday", not "already 12 years old and working towards 13". My understanding is that several authors have augmented GOTM, I have as one of my goals for this school year, finding these at the Sw. Library and reading them. There are also, I am thinking I have been told, notes from the class DeCharms taught on this subject? Wish I had the time and money to go back and get an advanced degree from BA College! I feel pretty ignorant on this one. Another good read is Candy Quintero's recent Master's Thesis about edcational environment. I like the goals you listed! I have a goal of transforming the reading program I am using into one that uses OT, NT, and Writings as source material for the words and stories taught, so that kids who are just beginning to read will begin on sacred scripture. Wouldn't that plant a few remains that might sustain a kid through the rejecting years? I know that many feel that teenage rebellion is a [necessary?] part of adoloscence--I wonder true that is? Perhaps questioning and testing are, but why should rejecting be? Sounds like a good conversation to get going, Maynard. I have a couple of kids young enough to be possible beneficiaries. I think that something that is happening tonight may be a glimpse of what we could bring about in the larger culture of NC societies: My 15 yo daughter is going to an exploratory meeting of teens who are familiar with the Teen Group experience at Laurel, who want to get TG going in BA, with the Academy kids. I think that this is wonderful! Imagine getting healing and community going that young! I am so tickled about it. I suspect she will bring kids out of the woodwork that really care and are sick of the Gap and movies. I don't think so--I think that they are breaking the kids who showed up to the organizational meeting into manageable groups, and maintaining confidentiality within the groups. I will mention to her that there might be an outreach potential here, however. I don't know that Krista is the most email-friendly person, but then again, she does most of that from her account at ANC, so who knows? On her behalf, thanks for the idea.
